Part of Robert Baugh's Map of Shropshire 1808

Robert Baugh's Map
Robert Baugh's Map 1808.

The Shropshire tub boat canal is shown in blue with inclined planes in yellow and the tunnel at Stirchley in green.

In red is a railway (mineral line)
Disputes over the tolls charged on inclined planes appear to have stimulated the construction of an eight-mile railway from Hollinswood to the Severn at Sutton Wharf, downstream from Coalport. It was contemplated before the end of 1797, completed during 1799, and served several ironworks and coal mines, possibly built by Mr. Onion’s & Co of Oakengates. By 1812 the railway belonged to the Lilleshall Company, on whose behalf in 1815 William Horton agreed to close it, on payment of £500 to the Shropshire Canal Company.

Roads
Baugh shows the route southwards from Wellington along Arleston Lane to Dawley as a turnpike road: The direct route from Wellington through Lawley to Coalbrookdale was not built until 1816, and its link from Lawley crossroads to what is now Dawley High Street was only constructed in 1828.

Dawley Church
Note St Leonards at Malinslee is show as Dawley church.
